Joseph and the Angel and Obedience
Mary was engaged to a young man named Joseph, who was of the House of David, and was also a descendant of Adam and Abraham. When Joseph found out that Mary was with child, he sought to have her put away in secret, as he was a good man and didn’t want Mary to be publicly disgraced. Joseph contemplated this plan when an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, and told him not to worry about taking Mary as his wife as that which was conceived in her was of the Holy Spirit. He also told Joseph;
“And she will bear a son. And you shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who will save his people from their sins.”
– Matthew 1:21
Joseph agreed to marry Mary and to keep her a virgin until she gave birth to Jesus. All this was to come about because Joseph and Mary were united in their desire to serve Gods will. Even though their tasks were different, their purpose was to accomplish the same goal. This is how God desires to succeed through all believers who are members of the body of Christ.
There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.
Ephesians 4:4, 5, 6
To Joseph and Mary was given the honor of bringing the Savior into the world, and to all believers is given the honor of making known the Savior of the world. For this is the primary calling of all who have their hope in Jesus. Even though each individual believer has their own task to accomplish for Jesus, we would do well to remember that it is as the body of Christ that we are most effective in obtaining God’s will for one common goal. Jesus knew that combined faith always was to get results when he said;
“I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask; it shall be done for them by my Father who is in Heaven. For where two or three have gathered together in my name, there I am in their midst.”
– Matthew 18:19, 20
